Supporting Corpus Christi’s Future: The United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce’s Stance on Sales Tax Allocation

Amy Granberry

Board Chair

Dear Community Members,

On behalf of the Board of Directors for the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, we write to underscore our firm support for the continuation of the 1/8th cent sales tax dedicated to the Seawall and to advocate for the allocation of the soon-to-expire 1/8th cent sales tax to enhance the American Bank Center and the SEA District facilities. Our position is rooted in the conviction that these investments are not just necessary but essential for the resilience, growth, and vibrancy of Corpus Christi.

The Seawall: Our Shield Against Coastal Threats

The recent severe weather events have made it starkly clear how crucial robust flood protection infrastructure is for our city. The Seawall stands as a vital defense mechanism against the destructive forces of storms and coastal flooding. It is more than just a barrier; it is a lifeline for our residential areas and commercial districts. The continuation of the 1/8th cent sales tax dedicated to the Seawall is not merely an expense—it is a fundamental investment in the safety and resilience of our community.

Maintaining and enhancing the Seawall is imperative. It not only protects our properties and infrastructure but also ensures business continuity, attracts investment, and boosts tourism. By safeguarding our coastline, we enable long-term planning and execution of economic development projects, fostering a stable and prosperous future for Corpus Christi.

Bolstering Our Economy: The American Bank Center and SEA District

As we look ahead to the expiration of the other 1/8th cent sales tax, we see a unique opportunity to invigorate our local economy. Supporting the American Bank Center and the SEA District facilities is a strategic move to enhance our city’s appeal. These venues—comprising the Arena, Convention Center, Selena Auditorium, Museum of Science and History, Art Museum of South Texas, State Museum of Asian Cultures, and Harbor Playhouse—are not just buildings; they are the heart of our cultural and economic landscape.

These facilities are pivotal in attracting visitors, stimulating tourism, and providing essential venues for events that generate substantial revenue for local businesses. Many residents also take pride in using the Convention Center and Arena for various events, enhancing the sense of community and shared experience.

Tourism: A Driving Force for Our Local Economy

Tourism is a cornerstone of Corpus Christi’s economy. The events hosted at these venues draw countless tourists who spend generously on lodging, dining, and other local services. This influx of visitors not only bolsters our hospitality industry but also significantly increases tax revenue and creates numerous jobs for our residents. By allocating the expiring 1/8th cent sales tax to these assets, we ensure that Corpus Christi remains a premier destination for tourism and events, thereby strengthening our economic base and enhancing our community’s vibrancy.

A Call to Action

In conclusion, we urge the City Council to prioritize the continuation of the 1/8th cent sales tax for the Seawall and to allocate the expiring 1/8th cent sales tax towards enhancing the SEA District assets. These actions are not just proposals; they are critical steps towards protecting our city, promoting sustainable economic growth, and ensuring that Corpus Christi remains a thriving and dynamic community for businesses and residents alike.

Together, let us secure a future where Corpus Christi stands resilient, prosperous, and full of promise.

Sincerely,

Amy Granberry | Board Chair
