Triumph Over Kid Cancer: Building a Legacy of Leadership

Triumph Over Kid Cancer Foundation

In the heart of the Coastal Bend, the true strength of our community is measured by how we care for our most vulnerable members and how we prepare our youth for the future. Triumph Over Kid Cancer (TOKC) stands as a premier example of how a local non-profit can achieve both while creating a ripple effect of hope that reaches far beyond Corpus Christi.

A Mission Rooted in Local History

Founded by the late James Ragan and his sister Mecklin, TOKC was born from a desire to change the narrative for children facing pediatric cancer. What started as a grassroots effort in our own backyard has grown into a key driver for research and advocacy. By partnering with institutions like M.D. Anderson and Texas Children’s Hospital, every dollar raised locally is matched to double the impact of our community’s generosity. Both James and Mecklin Ragan are graduates from Mary Carroll High School in Corpus Christi, TX.

A Catalyst for Community Growth

The United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce recognizes that the health of our local economy is linked to the strength of our civic organizations. By fostering a culture of service, TOKC is essentially training the next generation of professionals who will lead our local businesses and government with integrity and heart.

Investing in Our Future Leaders

One of the most vital ways TOKC engages with our community is through the #DoThatOneThing! (DTOT!) Council. This initiative brings together middle school, high school, and college students to teach them that they do not have to wait until they are adults to make a difference.

The recent Annual Awards Ceremony for the Class of 2026 was a testament to this success. With nearly 500 attendees, the event highlighted the dedication of students who have spent their formative years advocating for others. These young leaders are gaining essential skills in:

  • Public Speaking: Finding their voice to champion a cause.
  • Organizational Leadership: Learning the logistics of community service.
  • Empathy and Advocacy: Developing a lifelong commitment to social responsibility.

More Than Just Fundraising

The outreach of TOKC extends into the daily lives of families navigating the unimaginable. Through programs like James’ Wingman, the foundation brings joy and a sense of normalcy back to children undergoing treatment. By fostering a community of Wingmen, TOKC ensures that no child or family feels they are fighting their battle in isolation.

From the energy of the annual Golf and Toga weekend to the quiet work of student councils, TOKC is woven into the fabric of our region. They are not just raising funds for research, they are raising the standards of what it means to be a supportive and engaged community.

A Unified Effort

When we support organizations like Triumph Over Kid Cancer, we are doing more than fighting a disease. We are supporting a culture of compassion and leadership that defines the best of Corpus Christi. The growth of the DTOT! Councils shows that our message is being heard and that the next generation is ready to lead with heart.

We invite every business owner, family, and resident to look at the work being done by TOKC. Whether through volunteering, attending an event, or supporting a student council member, your involvement helps ensure that the legacy of triumph continues for years to come.
