Support for Texas Mariculture Heads to Senate Finance Committee

Ginny Cross

VP of Government & Community Affairs

The Texas Legislature is entering the final stretch of the regular session, and several of our priority bills are gaining momentum. Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 21, at 9:00 AM, the Senate Finance Committee will hold a public hearing on two key pieces of legislation we are actively supporting. These bills aim to strengthen the Texas oyster industry, a vital and emerging sector in our state’s coastal economy.

Scheduled for Hearing:

HB 3486 (89th Legislature – Regular Session)
Relating to a reduction in the amount of sales and use tax collections that restaurant owners who purchase Texas farm-raised oysters are required to remit to the comptroller.
📅 Scheduled for public hearing: May 21, 2025

HB 3487 (89th Legislature – Regular Session)
Relating to a reduction in the amount of sales and use tax collections that restaurant owners who participate in an oyster shell recycling program are required to remit to the comptroller.
📅 Scheduled for public hearing: May 21, 2025

These bills represent smart, sustainable investments in Texas-grown seafood and coastal restoration. By incentivizing restaurants to buy local oysters and participate in recycling programs, we can boost our economy, protect marine ecosystems, and help this fledgling industry thrive.

How You Can Help
We encourage you to submit public comments in support of these bills to the Senate Finance Committee clerk:

Suggested message:
“I respectfully urge the Senate Finance Committee to support HB 3486 and HB 3487. These bills will create meaningful incentives for Texas restaurants to support local oyster farmers and invest in sustainable practices such as oyster shell recycling. These initiatives will strengthen our coastal economy, promote environmental stewardship, and provide long-term benefits for Texas communities.”

Special thanks to State Representative Todd Hunter for continuing to champion this important economic driver. Together, we can help Texas oysters and the communities that depend on them, grow strong.
