The United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce recently hosted our annual Board of Directors Strategic Planning Retreat—an energizing and forward-thinking session that highlighted the passion this board for serving our community. Please click here to get to know your 2025 Board of Directors.

This retreat was expertly facilitated by Eddie Aldrete, a professional with more than 40 years of experience in strategic communications, community engagement, and public affairs. Eddie’s insights and guidance were invaluable as we refined our vision for the future. His podcast, often referred to as the voice of the intersection of business, public policy, and politics, exemplifies the expertise and dedication he brought to the table.

We are a service organization created to help foster a welcoming business climate that creates opportunities for success and prosperity. That goal doesn’t just help a member business, it creates jobs within the company, it helps the many vendors and suppliers that support that community, and it helps produce the taxes that support the work of local government.

Our retreat wasn’t just about planning—it was about collaboration, reflection, and aligning our goals with the needs of the community we proudly serve and working on how to better serve the community. Our board members—who are the job creators and paycheck providers of our community, each bring unique skills and perspectives and are committed to making a tangible impact on our community. The discussions we held reaffirmed our shared dedication to the chamber’s core values: we collaborate, advocate, and grow our community.

Setting the Stage for 2025
The day began with an engaging introduction and focus on “kaizen,” the art of constantly improving your processes. It’s about strategy versus tactics, it’s about working smarter not harder and it’s above all about service. Service to our members and service to our community and region.

We discussed the vital difference between the two and how both are essential to achieving our mission. In our advocacy efforts, we take positions on local, state and federal policies that impact our local economy. But we can’t just opine on the work of others. We have to constantly be looking in the mirror to gauge what we are doing and how we are doing it. After all, we live in a dynamic world, not a static one. And that requires a dedication to accountability to keep us on track.

During the retreat, we reflected on the chamber’s role and purpose, the responsibilities of our board members, and how each of us can contribute to the chamber’s mission. A robust discussion followed on whether our leadership and membership goals align, and how we can ensure they work in harmony.

Goals to Strengthen Our Community
As we mapped out our priorities for 2025, we revisited and aligned our programming efforts around several key areas. Communities, like countries are built upon foundations of growth. No company, nor country can be prosperous if they are built upon foundations of stagnation or decline. That’s why, as a chamber of commerce, we support pro-growth policies.

These include community retention—ensuring that talent and businesses thrive in Corpus Christi, military mission assurance to sustain the critical role of our installations in the regional economy, workforce readiness to prepare individuals for the challenges of tomorrow and to supply a talent pipeline of workers for our local businesses. And we advocate for our infrastructure needs to foster growth and connectivity.

In addition to these priorities, we identified a new area of focus: healthcare. One third of the physician workforce has retired in recent years because they are baby boomers. The challenge is the o the rest of the baby boomers are consuming a greater percentage of healthcare services. We also know that a full and robust healthcare community is a key ingredient to economic development. So, we recognize the vital role in the well-being and prosperity of our community and we are committed to exploring opportunities to support and enhance healthcare initiatives.

Each of these goals ties directly into the chamber’s mission and will be critical in creating a sustainable, prosperous future for our members and our city.

Reflecting on 2024 and Beyond
We took time to review our accomplishments from 2024, assess the progress of our core pillars, and brainstorm innovative ideas for new events and initiatives. This honest reflection on what has worked and where we can improve will serve as the foundation for our 2025 strategy. More on that in the weeks to come.

The concept of “Dancing Bears,” inspired by an analogy Eddie shared about a Russian dancing bear concert that served as a prosperous symphony hallmark that they allowed to die, encouraged us to review what our dancing bears might be. What have we done over the years that worked well, and what might we want to revive?

This creative reflection sparked candid conversations about how we can better align our efforts, remain agile in a rapidly changing environment, and deliver meaningful impact to our community.

Strengthening Communication and Engagement
A key part of the retreat focused on message development, discipline, and delivery. We discussed how to ensure our members, elected officials, industry leaders, and prospective members hear about the chamber’s work. From our website to events, it’s clear that our message must be clear, consistent, and targeted to the right audiences. We also identified who needs to be in the room at our events to maximize impact.

A Vision for the Future
As we concluded the retreat, we identified our strategic priorities and goals for 2025. This shared vision will drive our efforts to ensure that the chamber continues to be a vital resource for the business community and a force for positive change in Corpus Christi.

Our retreat was a testament to the power of collaboration and the strength of our board. I am deeply grateful for the dedication of my fellow board members and the chamber staff who work tirelessly to make our vision a reality. Together, we are poised to make 2025 a year of significant progress and impact.

Let’s continue to collaborate, advocate, and grow our community. The future of Corpus Christi is bright, and I am honored to lead this exceptional team as we work toward our shared goals.
