What It Means to Be an Official Coast Guard City

The Coast Guard City designation is an official honor bestowed by the U.S. Congress and the Commandant of the Coast Guard. It recognizes municipalities that demonstrate extraordinary support for Coast Guard personnel and their families.

Corpus Christi is proud to be part of an elite group of cities nationwide, earned through decades of mutual support. From Air Station Corpus Christi’s founding in 1950 to the establishment of Sector Corpus Christi in 2005, our city and the Coast Guard have grown side by side.

Coast Guard City status reflects a deeply rooted community ethos:

• Shared Resilience: During severe weather events, hurricane responses, and coastal emergencies, Coast Guard teams and municipal leaders work hand in hand to protect lives and property.

• Warm Welcomes for Military Families: Local schools, businesses, and civic groups actively help active-duty personnel and their families feel at home when stationed in the Coastal Bend.

• Civic Advocacy: Through the Chamber’s South Texas Military Task Force, regional leaders champion projects and infrastructure that support local installations.

This designation lasts for five years and is eligible for recertification, ensuring that this relationship continues to grow and thrive.

Celebrating Partnership at Whataburger Field

While the designation represents decades of history, community events like Coast Guard Night at Whataburger Field offer a public stage to say thank you.

Active-duty members and their families were recognized on the field, receiving a standing ovation from fans, civic leaders, and fellow residents. To mark the occasion, the first 500 fans through the gates received a commemorative Coast Guard City T-Shirt provided co-jointly by the Chamber and the Port of Corpus Christi.
