Corpus Christi Designated as an Official Coast Guard City

Kresten Cook

South Texas Military Task Force, Exec. Director

We are proud to share some exciting and historic news for our community. The City of Corpus Christi has officially been designated aCoast Guard City—a rare and prestigious honor that highlights our deep, enduring support for the United States Coast Guard and their families. This distinction was granted by the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard and formally approved by the United States Congress, placing Corpus Christi among just 34 cities across the nation—and the first in Texas—to receive this recognition.

This honor did not happen overnight. It is the result of over 45 years of strong partnership between Corpus Christi and the Coast Guard. Since the Coast Guard’s establishment in our city, we’ve built a legacy of collaboration that touches nearly every part of our community—from joint missions with our police and fire departments, to critical safety training initiatives with the Port of Corpus Christi, and even the relocation of Coast Guard Air Sector operations to Corpus Christi International Airport.

With over a force of over 1,000 Active Duty, Civilian, Reservist, and Auxiliarist members, our area Coast Guard Sector and Air Station protects half of the Texas coastline and saves over 100 lives and $11 Million in property every year.

As one of seventeen Strategic Commercial Seaports, our Corpus Christi Coast Guard Sector   facilitates the movement of U.S. military equipment through our Port to locations around the world. Sector Corpus Christi’s efforts with federal, state, and local partners are vital to maintaining U.S. military presence as our nation focuses on multiple international threats

The Corpus Christi and Coast Guard partnership extends beyond operations. It’s also deeply personal.

From the only Coast Guard JROTC program in Texas at Veterans Memorial High School to the annual Military Appreciation Dove Hunt, and community-wide participation in solemn ceremonies like the CG123 Remembrance, Corpus Christi has shown time and again that we value our area military members and their families.

Mayor Paulette Guajardo added, “This recognition is a powerful testament to the commitment our entire community has shown in supporting the brave men and women of the United States Coast Guard. Their role in ensuring the safety and security of our coastal city is immeasurable.”

This designation lasts for five years and is eligible for recertification, ensuring that this relationship continues to grow and thrive. Later this year, the City of Corpus Christi will partner with the Coast Guard and community organizations to host a celebratory event honoring this milestone. It will be a time not just for celebration, but for reaffirming our commitment to the Coast Guard’s vital mission and its service members’ well-being.

On behalf of the South Texas Military Task Force, thank you to all who made this designation possible. It reflects not only our city’s gratitude but also our promise—to continue supporting those who serve with strength, respect, and unwavering appreciation.
