CB to DC: United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Advocacy Trip

Ginny Cross

VP of Government & Community Affairs

Last week, the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce proudly embarked on our annual advocacy trip to Washington D.C., a event known as “CB to DC.” This journey provided us with the invaluable opportunity to meet with a wide range of leaders, including senators and members of Congress, to discuss and advocate for the pressing needs of the Coastal Bend region.

A few of the key advocacy points that were at the top of our priority list

During our trip, we focused on several critical issues that are vital to the continued growth and prosperity of the Coastal Bend such as:

  1. Support for Military Installations Our military installations, particularly the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi (NASCC) and Corpus Christi Army Depot (CCAD), are cornerstones of our community and economy. We emphasized the urgent need for a Childcare Development Center at NASCC and CCAD to support the families of those who serve. This facility will provide much-needed assistance to military personnel, ensuring they have reliable and accessible childcare, which is crucial for their wellbeing and efficiency.
  2. Water Resources Water is a lifeline for any community, and the Coastal Bend is no exception. We discussed the importance of securing sustainable water resources to support both residential needs and industrial growth. We advocated for increased federal grant funding available to utilities for new water supply strategies, including alternative water supply, and
for maintenance of existing water infrastructure to keep water rates affordable for all customers.
  3. Port of Corpus Christi FY2025 The Port of Corpus Christi is a vital economic engine for our region. We advocated for the necessary funding and support in the FY2025 budget to enhance the port’s infrastructure and capabilities. These improvements are essential to maintaining the port’s competitiveness and facilitating increased trade and economic activity.
  4. Permitting Reform The current permitting process is be a significant hurdle for development and business growth. We pressed for reforms that would streamline this process, making it more efficient and less costly. Simplifying permitting procedures will help expedite projects, foster economic development, and attract more investment to the Coastal Bend.
  5. Air Quality Ensuring good air quality is paramount for the health and wellbeing of our residents. Our region is one of the only industrial airsheds in the United States that remains well in attainment for ozone and PM2.5 and all criteria pollutants per the health-based pollution standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is imperative that the Administration and the EPA support the value of our shared programs and efforts by maintaining the current NAAQS for ozone and[SM1] PM2.5 encouraging communities to be successful with their voluntary programs and initiatives that we have demonstrated over the last 25 years to be successful[SM2] so that we can continue the unprecedented economic growth of the Coastal Bend.

Meeting with Leaders

Our delegation had the privilege of engaging in meaningful discussions with numerous leaders, senators, and congress members. These discussions were crucial in conveying the unique needs and potential of the Coastal Bend region. The support and insights gained from these interactions will undoubtedly aid in advancing our advocacy efforts and bringing tangible benefits back to our community. It takes a team to make a difference and we had a great team in our nations capital representing the Coastal Bend

Gratitude to Our Sponsors

The success of “CB to DC” would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Valero, CPS Energy, Cheniere, and the City of Corpus Christi. Their commitment to our community and backing of this advocacy trip have been invaluable. Their support underscores the collaborative spirit that drives the Coastal Bend forward.

Looking Ahead

As we return from Washington D.C., we are more energized and determined than ever to continue our advocacy for the Coastal Bend. The insights and commitments gained during this trip will guide our efforts in the coming months. We remain dedicated to working tirelessly for the betterment of our region, ensuring it remains a vibrant and thriving community for all.

Stay tuned for further updates on our advocacy initiatives and how you can get involved in supporting the Coastal Bend. Together, we can achieve great things for our community.
