There’s something inspiring about standing on the deck of a ship, looking toward the horizon, and realizing that the future of our region’s workforce might just lie in the water. That was the energy behind the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce’s recent visit to Texas A&M University at Galveston—and now, we’re channeling that momentum into something meaningful.
As we end the month of May—recognized nationally as Maritime Month—we’re proud to carry that spirit forward with a bold new step.

On May 14, representatives from the United Chamber, the Port of Corpus Christi, Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend, and Texas A&M University at Galveston came together on campus for a collaborative day of learning, exploring, and planning. The agenda included a tour of the TS Kennedy training ship, lunch with cadets, and deep discussions around maritime programs and workforce development.
That day sparked something powerful—so much so, that we’re launching a new initiative to keep that momentum going:
A Bold Step Toward the Future
Corpus Christi is home to one of the most important ports in the country. But unlocking its full potential means investing in the next generation of maritime professionals—engineers, ship operators, business administrators, marine scientists, and more. The Maritime Task Force will bring together key sectors to strengthen the region’s talent pipeline and ensure local students and job seekers are aware of, and prepared for, high-quality careers in this vital industry.
This initiative aims to:
- Raise awareness about maritime careers and opportunities connected to the Port of Corpus Christi
- Strengthen partnerships between the business community and higher education
- Align workforce training programs with real-world industry needs
- Advocate for policies and programs that support maritime workforce development
Built on Collaboration
The Task Force is made possible through the combined efforts of several key partners:
- The United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce, leading the initiative and convening stakeholders
- The Port of Corpus Christi, one of the largest ports in the U.S. and a key driver of regional economic growth
- Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend, providing expertise in career readiness and training pathways
- Corpus Christi ISD, preparing the next generation through strong foundational education and early exposure to maritime career pathways
- Texas A&M University at Galveston, home to the Texas A&M Maritime Academy and leading academic programs in marine and maritime studies
These organizations are coming together with a shared vision: to ensure Corpus Christi’s maritime future is driven by local talent and built on a foundation of opportunity, innovation, and equity.
What’s Next?
The Chamber is organizing the first official Maritime Task Force Committee meeting in early June. This founding group will outline goals, set timelines, and begin shaping the future of the initiative.
In even more exciting news, the NSMV Lone Star State—a brand-new national security multi-mission vessel—will be visiting during its sea trials. Plans are already underway to coordinate with academic leaders from Texas A&M Galveston for a follow-up visit, building on the connections and energy from the May 14 trip.
