Securing Our Future: Addressing the Coastal Bend’s Growing Water Crisis Together

David Leo

Policy Committee Chair

Water is essential to advancing economic development and meeting the needs of businesses and residents. However, the State and the Coastal Bend face mounting challenges as population growth, economic expansion, and environmental factors place increasing pressure on our water resources. For the first time in history, Corpus Christi is under Stage 3 water restrictions. The cities of Portland, Robstown, Port Aransas, Rockport, Beeville, and Kingsville are also under Stage 3 restrictions. The water crisis is a growing concern for everyone across the Coastal Bend region.

Across Texas, business leaders and chambers of commerce are coming together to address this critical issue. Coalitions are forming statewide to advocate for a dedicated funding revenue and sustainable policies that can meet both today’s needs and the demands of the future. These efforts aim to secure reliable funding solutions to address Texas’ growing water challenges, ensuring communities, like Corpus Christi, can adapt and thrive during increasing demands and recurring drought conditions.

The Chamber’s role in this effort is clear: we must lead the charge in advocating for policies that support these investments. By joining statewide coalitions advocating for solutions to address the intensifying challenges of water access in the face of drought, we can push for innovative solutions tailored to the Coastal Bend’s needs.

Representative Todd Hunter’s message about unity at the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce’s 2025 legislative luncheon resonates deeply in this context. Our best chance to overcome the water crisis lies in coming together with a unified and collaborative approach, with businesses, residents, and industries working hand-in-hand with our elected leaders.

As efforts to develop alternative water sources continue to progress, we can advocate tirelessly to make sure funding is available to support these critical efforts. Dedicated state funding is a potential tool to help ease current financial obligations, including operational, maintenance, and future development needs. Other key areas that could benefit from dedicated funding include conservation programs, addressing energy challenges, and education initiatives to promote water conservation.

The time to act is now. Let’s ensure the Coastal Bend has the water resources it needs to thrive, providing residents with security, businesses with stability, and industries with the reliability to grow and succeed.
